Serie A: We Hate Ben 0-4 Bayer Diamonds

We Hate Ben suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of a strong Bayer Diamonds side, but the match could have turned out differently had WHB not had a goal disallowed early on.. WHB lined up with a number of changes from the side which saw off Balls Deep, with Dan Fellows starting at right back, and Will McIlhiney given a start in the centre of midfield.

The match started brightly, and keeper Tim Dulson was called into action early to make a smart stop from one of the Diamonds forwards, the first of many excellent saves Dulson made throughout the afternoon. The first fifteen minutes remained a relatively even affair, with centre forward Jay Walker harshly disallowed a goal for a foul on the opposition keeper. Despite the opening moments showing a fair split in possession, Diamonds took the lead just after the 15 minute mark, when a set piece caught out the WHB defence, and an unmarked player was left to head home. At 1-0, WHB still produced a number of threatening chances, with captain Rhys Jones making some good runs down the right flank; but a genuine threat on goal remained elusive. Diamonds continued to press, and found a second goal towards the end of the first half, when a through ball was played to the Diamonds captain, who hit it first time past an unlucky oncoming Dulson. The rest of the first half remained thoroughly in favour of Diamonds, who ended the half strongly and WHB required a heroic block on the line from Jones to keep the score at 2-0 at the break.

The second half was once again fairly even in the opening stages, which included a number of threatening corners, exposing a fragility within the Diamonds defence. However, WHB couldn’t capitalise on this, and seemed to remain on the back foot, and had to once again rely on goalkeeper Dulson at the back to produce a number of outstanding saves. Dulson was unlucky for the 3rd Diamonds goal, where the left winger saw off two challenges and curled a beautiful effort into the top corner. With less than 10 minutes to go, Diamonds completed their win with a scrappy tap in goal from their substitute right-winger.

WHB look to bounce back for their next game against Glengower on Wednesday, and are hoping to include Jack Ingham, Jack Kelly, Harry Oliver and Danny Shaw in the match day squad after absences, and welcome back Joey Scutt and Andy Rhodes from long term injuries.
