We Hate Ben forward Jordan Watkins today spoke of his belief that the upcoming season can be a special one for the club. The 20-year-old Englishman believes the club can improve on last seasons 5th place finish and again challenge for honors at the top of the table.
Watkins said "I hope that we
continue building a strong squad that will continue to play nice
football like those few games we won last season, such as the [Unbelievable] Tekkers
performance, not fancy, but simple, quick football." Watkins continued "With the players we
still have, and the positions left from those moving on I would like to see us start strong and can become
contenders in both league and cup games" and that "I believe we have the ability to do
so [win trophies] and as long as results fall into place we have a good chance in
earning some silverware."
Watkins also believes that the new management team of James Amos and Matt Davies is a good choice, saying that Amos will "make good decisions and be someone who everyone can talk
to with any issues and ideas". Watkins also feels that the addition of Davies as Assistant will "hopefully help lead We Hate Ben to at least a trophy".
Watkins then went on to talk about the current squad, believing that despite the departures of long-serving players Chris Webster, Stuart Fleming, Danny Shaw and James Naik, the squad doesn't need loads of fresh faces. Watkins said "The squad is still large and although we have many numbers for most
positions, I feel as a whole we lack structure and could look to improve
on this with each friendly and training. As long as we can ensure
everyone can turn up to both training and games as much as possible the
team can become an even stronger unit." Watkins continued by saying that the four departures meant losing four "big personalities" who "made everyone
laugh as well as playing an important part during the league campaign."
However, with players such as "Davies and James 'Jimmy' Phillips", will be able to "keep spirits up" and former captain "Rhys [Jones] - when he remains upbeat and positive". The new captain Jay Walker will bring "loads of experience" and someone who can "read the game well and talks to everyone on and off the pitch. He will be a good leader for the team."
